Silk Fabrics

Silk fiber comes from cocoon of the silk worm, it is notable for its great length and strength in fact is stronger than steel wire of the same diameter. Once the special property of the Chinese Emperors, it is now used for many types of fabrics. It can be heavy and thick or fine, thin and transparent. Silk fabric should always be sewn with silk thread, cotton thread would be a second choice if silk is not available. Never use polyester thread, poly-wrapped thread or nylon to sew silk fabric as it cuts the fabric and will cause the seams to split in short time. Silk fabrics should be guarded from exposure to acids or strong alkalis such as vinegar, chlorine bleach, or strong lye containing soaps. Silk of many types can be washed, test a scrap first, in lukewarm water with mild soap such as Ivory Snow or our Washing Paste. Often to obtain the color of silk you need it is necessary to dye a white silk. Use Rit, Putman's or procrion dye following packaged instructions. Silk fabrics should always be washed and rinsed completely before dyeing. The fabric must be WET when it is put into the dye bath, the dye bath should be kept a BARE SIMMER, do not allow it to boil. After the shade you want has been achieved, remove from dye bath and rinse thoroughly. Dry the silk flat if possible. A Formica counter or tabletop is ideal. It may also be hung on a clothesline to dry. You cam embroider silk fabrics with silk, cotton floss or fine ribbon. Designs can be stenciled or painted on silk fabrics. Always test a scrap before tackling your silk yardage. Silk can be as easy to sew as cotton, though it may require you to adjust the tension on your sewing machine. To "age" a silk item, set it in the sunlight, turn frequently to allow it to fade evenly.
