Velvet, Velveteen, Pile Fabrics

Velvet is a pile cloth in which a succession of rows of short cut pile stand so close together as to give an even, uniform surface. Velvet is appealing to the eye and with soft hand. Velvet was first made of all silk, but today many major fibers are used in the constructions. Velveteen is a pile cloth in which the pile is made by cutting an extra set of filling. This low pile fabric is known as "cotton velveteen". This strong fabric can be laundered, will provide warmth and tailors well. Used in children's wear, coats, dresses, hangings, suitings, etc.
